Sustainability & Traceability
In this generation, fast fashion is very rampant and trending. Fashion retailers and manufacturers use leather, which is one of the most polluting industries in the world.
Did you know that every year, 30 billion pairs of shoes are thrown away into the environment?
Cheap materials are being used to create shoes. Back in the day, fashion was expensive. But nowadays, inexpensive materials are used to appeal to customers despite having poor quality.
Unfortunately, this causes the poor quality materials and shoes to be thrown away after being worn for months.
These cheaply made shoes will pile up and pollute the environment with chemicals such as lead and mercury, associated with learning disabilities and cognitive impairment for children exposed to high levels. In the United States alone, there are 583 million pounds of toxic waste created by fashion industries each year, and that 48 percent of fibers found in the ocean are microfibers from shoes we wear every day.
Fashion is being sold as a status symbol, but at what cost? Even if the buyer has the financial power to buy expensive clothing, they won’t wear it for a long time because it will only end up in the trash. The high level of pollution is taking its toll on our environment. This is why scientists and researchers are pushing for more sustainable fashion.
The problem is that fashion companies want to profit without thinking about environmental impacts which cause harm to living beings. It’s effortless to make money on low-quality products since people are willing to buy them due to their style and design.
In the fashion industry, some companies make cheap shoes and sell them at a high price. This results in a messy situation for environmentalists, designers, and consumers since products that go to waste are being dumped into the environment.
According to an article in The Guardian: “The clothes and shoes that go to landfill or end up as litter – up to 70% of clothes and shoes bought are thrown away – are cheap, ugly and almost always made from synthetic materials.” That means using natural resources like cotton, which can be reused or recycled instead of manufactured with chemicals which will eventually harm living beings.
That is why sustainable fashion is a necessity now. Sustainable fashion is creating clothing, shoes and accessories that are reusable or recyclable by using materials that can be reused or recycled.
